TOUR IMPACT ON LOCAL COMMUNITY

  • Sinai Local Impact |

EMBAH is committed to the elements of responsible & sustainable tourism, and this tour boasts multiple benefits to the local community. While travelling in the Desert & Mountainous regions of Sinai, work opportunities and therefore income is distributed between multiple desert dwelling families. Wherever possible we purchase local produce, encourage souvenir purchase from the Bedouin women and use local homes for meals. The projects we support in this region are:

    • Nawamis Desert School | An initiative developed by a UK charity that was brought about to enable the Bedouin villagers to remain in their desert homes and maintain their traditional way of life and still have their children educated. It also provides a special meeting place where Bedouin tribes can gather and celebrate.

    • Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Gardens | a local initiative to preserve Rare medicinal plants unique to the region. Herbs gardens have been created on various plots in land throughout St Catherine’s and are also cultivated in greenhouses for preserving biodiversity, research and for sale.

Departure from Dahab at 08:00 am by van to reach El Milga village. We set out on foot from El Milga village via Abu Giffa Pass, a man-made thoroughfare which is part of the road to the ruins of the palace of Abbas Basha. The top of the pass offers a north-eastern view over the Raha valley and the new village of El Milga, as well as of an old tiger trap. Descending through the Tubug valley we reach Wadi Shagg, surrounded by beautiful gardens for the entire length of the valley. Please note that it is strictly forbidden to enter any of them unless one has been invited. Wadi Shagg is dotted with waterholes and pools, huge rock formations and Byzantine ruins. Continuing at a comfortable pace, we reach Wadi Ghazna and onwards in a westerly direction to the crossroads of the Zuweitin – Naqb Gibal, site of a group of ancient olive trees. Bedouin tradition holds that these were planted by the founder of the Gibaliyah tribe. Here we will set up our overnight camp, unless we have made sufficient speed to proceed further through Naqb Gibal in the direction of Gibal Valley, stopping at a site dotted with copses and wells.
Our ascent of Naqb Gibal towards Gibal Valley is followed by a descent leading to a berry tree situated at the end. A winding path by the name of Umm Siha leads upwards to a vantage point from where we can enjoy a panoramic view of Wadi Gibal and the rest of our route. Two unspoilt valleys, Farsh Asara and Farsh Arnab, give us a hint of the intense beauty of the landscapes which, we are about to enter. The spot is dominated by two soaring mountains, namely Ras Abu ‘Alda, 2165 metres high, and Gebel Abu-Gasba, whose peaks offer breathtaking views. Continuing onwards, we pass through the only freshwater spring in the area, Ein Nagila. Descending through Naqb Bahriya to Farash Rumana, we reach the location of our overnight camp. Again, if we have made sufficient speed, we will use the time available to visit Bab el Dunya, site of a ruined Byzantine monastery and offering views to south west.
Our first destination of the day is a narrow canyon, leading to an equally narrow path characterised by numerous berry trees. The high point of our trek is a place by the name of Galt el Azarq, location of a group of pools and waterholes, and here we will take the opportunity to bathe and rest. Very refreshing but be warned that the water is extremely cold. An ancient path by the name of Umm Sila, leads to Farsh Umm Sila, location of our third night’s camp. Again, an alternative camping location is Farsh Tuweita, if we have any spare time to proceed a little further.
Taking an undemanding route to Wadi Tinya down Wadi Tuweita, we continue in a south – westerly direction to Gebel ‘Abbas Basha. We will trek through an ancient camel pass. At ‘Abbas Basha we can leave our heavy equipment and collect it on our way down the mountain. This is a recommended climb, being paved and therefore relatively undemanding, whilst offering a breathtaking and panoramic view from the peak, which soars to a height of 2304 metres. Our descent is likewise on a paved path, through Wadis Zuweitin and Tubug in the direction of the Abu Giffa Pass and onward to El Milga village, our original starting – point. We will be transferred by van to Dahab at around 5:30 pm.
